“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the Rock and firm Strength of my heart and my Portion forever.” Psa 73:26 (Amplified)

A close friend was about to go into hospital for angioplasty and we were praying for her. As the prayer progressed, a song rose up in my heart with the words of the above Psalms. I soon realised that God was giving me a word for my friend, so after we had concluded our prayer, I shared this word with her that God says ‘He is the strength of your heart.’ Naturally, she was blessed and held on in faith to that word as she was wheeled into the theatre a few days later. The operation was an unqualified success.

Some days after the operation, my wife and I paid her a visit in the hospital and learnt that during the operation my friend’s heart actually stopped and had to be restarted again. She momentarily died and was resuscitated. Her husband, who knew about the crisis, was shaken but not stirred as he held on to God’s promise concerning his wife. Well, that heart is still beating fine and will do so until God calls her home to glory, for He is indeed the strength of her heart.

You will also notice that the Psalm above also has the phrase – ‘my portion forever’. Well, that is not an afterthought. In fact, it is what a strengthened heart appropriates – our portion in God. A portion is that part of the whole that falls to you. It means that when your heart is strong, it enables you to claim that part of God that belongs to you. For example, where God’s word says that He is life and you believe it in your heart, it will strengthen your resolve to repudiate every death-causing situation that the devil might choose to bring your way. This will in turn enable you to appropriate the life that is in God’s word and reap the blessings God intended for you.

The bible says Jam 1:17 that all good gifts come from God. As a Christian that is your portion in life. Anything else does not originate from Him. God’s portion represents that part of God that blesses you and glorifies Him. So, if some things are still missing in your life, what you need to do is to strengthen your spirit by imbibing God’s word. Allow God’s word to be the bedrock on which you build your life, so that when Satan comes with the storm of his vile works and attacks you, you are simply too deeply-rooted in God to be shaken. God’s word will become a shield – an insurmountable barrier to the devil and which guarantees that you are a winner. However, this is only the beginning as God intends for you to do exploits in His name. The bible says that they that know their God shall be strong and shall do exploits. Dan 10:32. This is the secret of the success of biblical heroes like Abraham, Joshua, Caleb and many more.

So, whatever you circumstance and whatever the challenge you may be facing, let God add strength to your heart and prepare you to partake of the portion of blessings that He has specifically prepared for those who love Him. Even if your heart is presently broken, God has the remedy for broken hearts, for He is Balm in Gilead. He will soothe the aching, heal the broken hearted and bind up their wounds. Psa 147:3. This will stand you in good stead and enable to go on and do exploits in His name.

Prayer:
Lord, strengthen me in the inner man through your word and cause me to do exploits in your glorious name. Amen.
