“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Est 4:14 (NIV)
It is a reality that many of us struggle to share our faith in Jesus Christ, especially in our work places. In line with the prevailing post modernism thinking, the key word governing interaction in most offices is ‘Tolerance’. By this it means that you are expected to respect and regard other people’s faith and lifestyle, however divergent or perverse, as being no different in value from yours. Hence, any attempt differentiate yourself or underline your faith is usually met with varying responses ranging from ostracisation to mockery and indifference, finally ending in grudging respect. In other words, the atmosphere is increasingly hostile to sharing the Gospel. So, what do we do as Christians who are mandated to “Preach the word in season and out of season”?
First, we need to understand that God has called us to witness to His name and show forth His glory to the world. This is the reason why Apostle Paul said “Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.” 1 Cor 9:16-17 (NIV)
Second, we need to understand that Jesus Christ is indispensable to our salvation. We all need Jesus. Without Him we are lost for all eternity and are already condemned to God’s judgement, irrespective of how successful we might be. John 3:18.
Third, understand that most people have problems or issues that they cannot resolve on their own and would thus welcome help from those they can trust. You are that person. Job 14:1.
Fourth, ask God to use you to meet these needs and thus demonstrate Christ’s love to the needy. However, just asking might not be enough. We also need to seek God on their behalf, with fasting where necessary, so that both they and we can experience spiritual breakthroughs. 2 Cor 10:3-6
Fifth, understand that it is no longer profitable or advisable to bible bash people in your effort to share Jesus Christ with them. More often than not, they will tend to resent you for your brash yet sincere effort. Rather, do your best to cultivate their friendship, earn their trust and thus position yourself to influence their lives for God. You surely can do that by living a Godly lifestyle. Matt 5:16.
Like Esther, you will definitely have many excuses not to care about the needs you see around you. Nevertheless, never forget the truth that you are where you are today as a representative of God’s Kingdom for such a time as this. You are called to make a difference. So, what are you waiting for?
